Go Green: How to Incorporate Green into Your Home Decor

Green is natural, soothing. It is a color associated with life, renewal, and growth. For many, it evokes thoughts of balance, prosperity, health, and wellness. Studies even show that green can restore mental clarity and inspire creativity

One of the biggest color trends for 2022, we first saw its rise in popularity with last year’s green kitchen trend, which is now carrying over into other spaces throughout the home. Wonderfully versatile, green pairs well with some of my favorite design elements, including natural materials, metal finishes, and light, ashy wood tones.

Emerging from the harsh winter months here in Denver, CO, I am more than ready to welcome the mood-boosting and restorative powers of nature into my home and interior design projects. I hope to inspire your own fresh, clean —and green—start to spring with the following tips for incorporating the color into your interior spaces.

GREEN PAINT

Green paint is a great way to boldly embrace this color trend and breathe life into kitchen cabinetry, home offices, and accent walls. As a color family, green provides so many options. From lighter shades of mint and sage to darker, luxurious shades of emerald and basil, you can utilize green to brighten up a space or create a moody, dramatic sanctuary.

Traditionally white, I opted instead for Sherwin-Williams 6186 Dried Thyme paint to highlight the wainscoting in my son Emerson’s nursery.

What I love about green is that it’s timeless. When I think of green, I think of everything from the Victorian era and turn of the century Craftsman homes to the mint greens and turquoise of the 1950s and avocado green appliances from the ‘60s and ‘70s. By selecting a classic shade of green paint from Sherwin-Williams’ Historical Colors collection, you can stay on trend without worrying whether or not your home will withstand the test of time.

GREEN WALLPAPER

Another fun, high-impact option is green wallpaper. I’m always excited when a client is willing to embrace an eclectic wallpaper that can elevate a small space like a nursery, bedroom, or powder room (my personal favorite).

Faithfully reproduced from the watercolors of architect C. F. A. Voysey, Trustworth Studios Wallpapers “Whoot” pattern comes in a classic blue-green palette that features a playful pattern of owls, owlets, foliage, and nests and is seen in my Eclectic Cottage bathroom design.

GREEN TILE

If you’d prefer to ease into green, consider slightly smaller projects like adding a green backsplash in an otherwise neutral kitchen. Green glazed tiles are also a cozy, traditional option for fireplaces. Recently used in my Eclectic Cottage Project living room, Bedrosians Tile & Stone’s Cloe 2.5″ x 8″ Ceramic Tile in Green was the perfect solution for making the client’s wood-burning fireplace the centerpiece of the home.

Currently, I’m working with Apex Homes, LLC on a spec house that will be for sale in 2023, and I am already fawning over Bert & May’s encaustic Formentera Tile in a chalky, fennel green that is handmade with all-natural pigments.

STATEMENT PIECES, LIGHTING & GREEN FURNITURE

Because rich, earthy shades of green hold the potential for creating a real “wow-factor,” something as simple as a green piece of furniture, accent rug, pillows, or lighting can easily set the tone for the rest of a room without moving away from an overall neutral palette. Soft furnishings can also function as a way to mix and match complementary shades of green to create depth.

PLANTS & GREENERY

Not quite prepared to commit to a green accent wall or an all-green home office? No problem! One of the simplest ways that you can begin to play with pops of green is to literally bring the outdoors in. Thoughtfully placed houseplants can improve your indoor air quality, help reduce stress levels, and will never go out of style.
